The castle's origins date back to the 9th century, when it was built as part of the defensive network of the Lombards, who ruled much of southern Italy.
It was later expanded under Norman rule in the 11 century, becoming part of the larger Barony of Cilento.
The village of Rocca Cilento developed around the castle thanks to its strategic position overlooking the Alento Valley and offering a view that reaches all the way to the sea.
The Sanseverino Family (12-16 Centuries)
The Sanseverino Family, one of the most powerful feudal families in southern Italy, took control of the castle in the 12 Centuries.
Under the Sanseverino dynasty, the castle became the administrative center of a vast feudal territory.
They fortified the structure, adding towers and walls to protect it from invasions and rebellions.
Decline and Abandonment (17-19 Centuries)
With the decline of feudal power and the emergence of new political structures, the castle's strategic importance diminished.
Over time, the castle fell into disuse, and the once-thriving village began to depopulate, especially in the 19 century.
Modern Era and Restoration (20-21 Centuries)
In recent decades, the castle has undergone significant restoration work aimed at preserving its historical value and dedicating it to cultural and tourism initiatives.
Today, Rocca Cilento Castle is privately owned and serves as a luxury accommodation facility, hosting events and weddings and offering breathtaking views of the landscape of Cilento.
